The American Airlines refund procedure is simple but somewhat onerous.
Anytime before departure, refundable tickets may be returned to the original payment method. You can ask for a refund on the American Airlines website if you bought the ticket directly from them. However, you must get in touch with the travel agent directly if you bought your ticket from one, whether it was a conventional travel agent or an online travel agency like Expedia.
Only the following scenarios qualify a non-refundable ticket for a refund more than 24 hours after purchase:
